Writing
by Judson Mitcham

This broadside is part of the Fragments series and corresponds to the letterpress book Heart of All Greatness. Each broadside in the series features an image panel, a fragment from a portrait of my father. This particular poem is one of my favorite poems by Judson Mitcham. It tells the story of a writer finding out on the morning of his father's funeral that his father has been writing since his two brothers died. Everyone else in his family has known about his father, and they tell the speaker that he probably didn't know because he is a writer, and his father "was embarrassed by his effort." However, it is then that the speaker understands his father in a way that the rest of his family does not. The title of the book Heart of All Greatness comes from the last line of this poem. Letterpress printed from metal types and reduction linoleum block on Rives heavyweight paper.
