Kiyoko
by Sara Pirkle Hughes
This book was letterpress printed on Japanese style Alabama kozo paper, handmade by the artist in the fall of 2005. These haikus, written by the artist's twin sister, illustrate the life of their grandmother Kiyoko- uprooted from her family in Japan as a young woman, starting a new life in America in the unforgiving South of the 1950s. Printed from metal types and reduction linoleum blocks, and bound in a variation of the Japanese stab binding. Deluxe edition is cased in a variation of the Japanese portfolio structure, with bone clasps.
